Garden Base

10ft x 8ft Plastic Shed Base Installed Under A Crane Shed

This case study comes from a customer who after purchasing a brand new wooden shed, was looking for a strong and suitable base that was easy to lay and could be installed on his sloped garden. Alistair had looked into having the area concreted and found that the amount of cement needed to overcome his problem would have been considerable, thus began his search for an alternative:

Alistair began his search after purchasing his shed from Crane Sheds (specifically the Wheatcroft Notcutts Garden Centre in Edwalton, Nottingham branch). He researched online to find the best alternative foundation to install before his shed arrived, which is when he came across our website and our easy to lay, fully recycled plastic bases.

After reading up on our bases’ many benefits such as:

  • Able to hold up to 420 tonnes per square metre
  • Easy To Install
  • Permeable
  • Weather and UV Resistant
  • Made from 100% recycled plastic here in the UK

Alistair ordered a 10ft x 8ft Plastic Shed Base along with a Shed Base Membrane and 20 U-Pins soon after and received them in easy to handle packages just a few working days later.

The following weekend, Alistair began his installation. Following the Shed Base Installation guide that is included with every order, he had his base installed the same day.

Alistair began the installation by measuring out and digging out the 10ft x 8ft area where his base and shed would be installed. With the soil and turf removed, Alistair then proceeded to lay his shed base membrane and secured it into the ground using the U-pins to create a protective cover.

Membranes stop weeds and plants from growing up through the base and reaching your shed, whilst remaining permeable so any water can still drain away naturally. With the membrane in place, Alistair filled the area with 30 bags of sand then compacted and levelled it as well as he could to create a flat solid sub-base on which the base and shed would be installed.

On top of the compacted surface, Alistair began laying his fully recycled plastic shed base. Starting in one corner and working his way across the area, he laid 4 panels at a time and simply connected each neighbouring panel together using the specially designed slot and peg system. Once the base was completed, he filled all of the base with small decorative gravel (we recommend up to 20mm gravel and estimate that around 8kg of gravel is needed to fill each individual panel).

Finally, all that was left to do was for Crane to deliver and install Alistair’s shed and the project was complete!

We all agree that Alistair’s new shed looks fantastic on his plastic base! We’re sure it will serve him well for years to come and it will be supported well by our base.

Alistair told us “Our main problem with installing a shed base was the slope in my lawn. The amount of cement to overcome this problem would have been considerable. Instead of concrete, we dug the base out of the lawn and filled it with 30 bags of sand. Then we put the plastic base on it and levelled it, using small stones to help keep it stable.”
